It was a chaotic scene at Government Plaza as the Mobile City Council was preparing to discuss Mayor's Sam Jones' annexation plan. Long lines formed before the meeting. The long line wrapped through the Government Plaza lobby. News 5's Jessica Taloney reports that so many people showed up for the meeting, the fire marshal had to close the meeting. About 20 people who wanted to attend today's City Council meeting were turned away.

The annexation issue has been a hot topic. The Mayor unveiled his plan to annex four areas, including part of Theodore-Tillmans Corner and an area near Semmes.

At the end of Tuesday's meeting, which lasted four hours, the council voted 7-0 in favor of Mayor Jones' aggressive annexation plan.

Jessica is covering this story and will have a full report on News 5 and wkrg.com.

Everyone that has been deliberately denied the right to vote in these areas should contact the State Attorney General’s office and file a complaint.  For example, in the Semmes area, everyone in the 36575 zip should file a complaint.  We need to do something to get the Justice Department’s interest.

Yeah, I think there is a Voter’s Rights issue hidden within all this annexation BS and it is left to the Justice Dept. to uphold those rights.
. We can not rely upon the city politicians to make reasonable assertions based upon right or wrong.  All they see are potential dollar signs and all ethical behavior goes out the window.

BamaBob, you mean the same Justice Department that put the Border Patrol agents, Ramos and Campean, in prison for 10-12 YEARS and gave immunity to a KNOWN illegal alien Mexican drug smuggler? Yeah, that’ll give us “justice”. I’m so fed up with local and national insanity where everything right is wrong and lies are put out there as truth. We’re in the Twilight Zone.
Keep up with stuff at the SaveSemmes.com website

Not only were the contentions of the opponents of annexation not heard but instead, we were taken to task by members of the city council, almost to the point of how dare us complain that we pay the tax and want to have a say in the matter.  If you were not present, many people got up and left during Fred Richardson’s lecture.

Were any business owners in the effected areas present at the council meeting today?  Where do they stand on this annexation? The Business can not vote on the annexation. Only the people that live in the white box on the map. Sorry to say that as the white box. But the 1000 people in that area are the ones who have a vote. The other roads On the map with people living on them have no vote.

I’m disappointed that all 7 council members looked at this and voted yes without question.  I thought maybe at least one of them would have looked beyond putting more money in their discretionary funds and looked at the bigger picture.
. Mobile countians will not receive fair treatment from anyone living within the city limits, including any judge that might end up hearing the future lawsuit.  We need the right, unbiased legal eagle to take this to the state attorney general, or the justice department.

Well, seems like Mobile’s City Council is as crooked as it’s Mayor.  This is the most blatant move to tax citizens without representation that I can think of.  I for one will shop for everything outside Mobile’s City Limit (including the new areas if this annexation goes through.  I would rather spend the extra 2 cents driving to Lucedale or Saraland than see Mobile get another penny of my sales tax dollars!  I can’t believe the City Council could not see how unfair this is to the residents of those living outside the areas allowed to vote (particularly those along the Moffett Road corridor that excludes 90% of those living one lot away from Moffett Road on either side west of Bear Fork Road.  I am also going to encourage everyone I know out in the Semmes/Crawford area to drive to MS to shop, or to Baldwin County for large purchases.  I won’t buy another vehicle or major appliance in Mobile’s taxation without representation area.

If I lived in Mobile and this effected me…I would be mad as a hornet and I hate that yall have to go through this….Sam Jones has shown his true colors…It really looks bad on him…but he nor the council care what anyone thinks….UNLESS YOU ARE IN THEIR VOTING DISTRICTS…Money as always is the bottom line when it comes to politics…Sad part is…while this may seem unethical or in poor taste…I dont think anything that he wants to do is illegal…Not sure really, im no expert in that area….but what he is wanting to do is shameful and a slap in the face to alot of people.

It sounds like they have found some loophole in the law that they think will allow them to do this without consulting with those most impacted by the change.  Something just isn’t adding up.

I think that the majority of the Semmes residents object strongly to the posibility that we could be unwillingly annexed into the city of Mobile at some future date.  Most of us are quite happy with our country-like atmosphere and with the peace and quiet that we love and enjoy so much.  None of us want higher taxes and definitely hate the idea that we would pay out money that we can ill afford in today’s economy to a city that would give us nothing that we do not have already.  All that we would gain is a city that dictates what we can and cannot do and gives us absolutely no say-so in the rules and regulations
pushed upon our lives.  The current annexation proposal by the city of Mobile is probably only the beginning of their actual eventual goal of grabbing every unincorporated area of south Alabama and forcing the residents to live under their dominance.  The idea of a City of Semmes is a good one and should be pursued at once. Support all efforts to make Semmes a city!!!
