Associated Press - HOMEWOOD, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say Alabama police who tried to question three people wound up in a shootout that left a man dead and an officer wounded near Birmingham.
The shooting occurred early Thursday in the suburban city of Homewood.
Police Sgt. John Carr tells local news outlets that two officers saw two vehicles outside an appliance store about 1:30 a.m. One of the vehicles had its trunk open and three people were nearby.
Authorities say one of the men began running and opened fire. Both officers returned fire, fatally wounding the man. One of the officers was shot in the leg and is expected to recover. The officer was released from the hospital Thursday morning and is recovering at home.
The dead person is described as a black man, but authorities haven't released his name. They also haven't released any information about the officer.
