BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WKRG) - Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin is calling for a controversial church sign to come down.
"Black folks need to stay out of white churches," reads the sign at New Era Baptist Church, which the mayor says is a black church.
Mayor Woodfin took to Twitter on Tuesday to speak out against the sign:
There is a spirit of racism and division that is over this city. It must be brought down. We have to change the conversation to what we need it to evolve into. "Darkness can not drive out darkness. Only light can do that. Hate can not drive out hate; only love can do that."
The other side of the sign reads, "White folks refused to be our neighbors."
The pastor at New Era Baptist Church told media in Birmingham the sign was in response to a multi-cultural and multi-denominational church that recently opened a location in a part of town known for having a lot of crime.
New Era Baptist Church is no stranger to controversy. Previous signs have stirred up plenty of debate over topics such as the election of Donald Trump and the death of Trayvon Martin.
