Horace Luckey arrived on Iwo Jima the day after the Marines landed. He was on LST 779, the first LST to the beach. Also on board was a flag, recovered from a ship sunk at Pearl Harbor. It happened to be a "Sunday Pennant," a particularly large flag used for special occasions. As it turned out, that flag was used for something very special.
