Home invasion victim talks about suspect fatally shot by deputy

GULF BREEZE, Fla. (WKRG) - - A woman is speaking out after she says a man broke into her home and minutes later was shot dead by a sheriff's deputy in her driveway.

Neighbors say this is typically a quiet community just off of Gulf Breeze Parkway in Santa Rosa County.

"I don't want people to think this neighborhood is dangerous," Peggy Purves said.

Purves was out walking her two dogs on Bright Water Drive Tuesday afternoon as she normally does.

"As I was coming back, this boy, a young man, in an old car stopped me and rolled his window down and said 'Do you know Jody? Do you know where Jody lives?' I said 'No, I don't know a Jody."

She says he drove a couple hundred feet down the street then came back. He got out of the car and started chasing her so she ran into the garage and closed the door. He then knocked his way through a glass window, according to Purves.

"He chased me through the hallway," she said. "He was just a little ways behind me. I didn't know what to do. All I knew was to get him out of the house. Get him out of the house away from my handicapped husband and animals."

This whole time she was on the phone with 911. As soon as they got outside, one deputy was there and confronted the man.

"They scuffled and wrestled," she said. "Just one policeman and him. The policeman said I'm going to tase you. The boy knocked the taser to the ground out of his hand."

She said the man didn't have a weapon that she saw. She heard four gunshots and he was dead in the driveway but she says he seemed to be on drugs or "sick."

News 5 reached out to the Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office for an update but officials say there is nothing to release at this time.
