Green Beret charged with murdering estranged wife in Florida

CRESTVIEW, Fla. (WKRG) - A 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) soldier was arrested Sunday night for allegedly killing his estranged wife.

According to a news release, around 6:42 p.m. Crestview Police responded to the 1200 block of Northview Dr. in the Countryview Estates neighborhood for reports of gunshots. When officers arrived, 32-year-old Derek McKinney exited the home with his hands up, but police noticed what appeared to be blood on his tank top.

McKinney told police he shot his wife and gave her CPR, according to an arrest report.

Officers found 34-year-old Natasha McKinney lying on her back on the floor of the master bedroom with what appeared to be blood on her face, according to the report. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Derek McKinney, 32, was arrested on-scene. A police report shows he was under the influence of alcohol.

David Harriss lives in the neighborhood and jogs past the house three or four times a week. He's surprised to learn the news.

"I don't know the family," Harriss said. "They may come out and check the mail. I'm jogging and moving. Everybody just waves and says 'Hi"...It's a nice quiet neighborhood. Shocking to all of us."

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement responded and assisted Crestview Police in investigating the scene of the shooting. The incident remains under investigation.

McKinney is in the Okaloosa County Jail awaiting a bond hearing.
