18-year-old girl battles flu in the hospital

PENSACOLA, Fla. (WKRG) - An 18-year-old girl is battling the flu at West Florida Hospital according to her pastor.

Olive Baptist Church Pastor Ted Traylor says Brittan Lewis has been in the hospital for the last few days.

He says her father is the associate pastor at the church.

"She got sick a couple days ago and now she's been in the ICU and doctors told us she had a dire condition," Traylor said. They had her on a ventilator, she's been a very sick young lady."

Dr. John Lanza with the Florida Department of Health says the flu can hit the elderly and anyone under the age of 18 very hard.

"We've had two pediatric deaths in the state of Florida," Lanza said.

Traylor says the condition of Lewis seems to be improving. He says he's going to keep his faith.

"She is better today," Traylor said. "They took her off the ventilator late this afternoon and that was a great step."

Doctors say this flu season could last until mid-April.
