Update: Truck Overturns, Spills Hagfish All Over Highway in Oregon

WKRG Staff - PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN,WKRG) —

UPDATE: What was originally reported was a truck overturned on Hwy 101 in Lincoln County, Oregon, damaging a car and spilling a truckload of eels all over the road. Depoe Bay Fire District has updated that information saying they were actually hagfish.

According to Smithsonian.com, they are sometimes called "slime eels"—but they are not eels. They are in the class Agnatha, designated for fish without jaws (around 100 species in total).

The highway is covered with the eels and their slime. Fortunately, there were no injuries.

Highway 101 at milepost 131 is closed, the Oregon State Police said.
