Metro Jail Expansion Moving Forward

Mobile, AL (WKRG) - Members of the Mobile County Commission moved forward on plans for an expansion at Mobile Metro Jail.  Overcrowding and safety concerns have been a major issue for the MCSO for years.  Monday county commissioners approved an architecture firm for the project.  In late December commission members earmarked $15 million for the projects.

Upcoming improves include:

•             Construction of a new sally port to improve security, officer safety and efficiency when transporting prisoners to and from the jail

•             Construction of a new intake and docket area including new booking desk, holding cells, medical triage, fingerprinting and associated offices

•             Reconfiguration of the existing building to provide special needs housing, improved infirmary, a video visitation area and reconfigured administrative areas.

•             Security improvements--email from Mobile County Spokesperson Kathy Eddy

Warden Trey Oliver said these improvements are needed to prevent incidents like we saw two weeks ago where two inmates were stabbed in the jail.
