Kids "work" to raise money for Springhill sidewalks

SPRING HILL, Ala. (WKRG) - Local children in the Spring Hill area of Mobile are once again raising money to build more sidewalks in the community. The students are having lemonade stands and other fundraising activities ahead of the annual Sidewalk-A-Thon celebration this Friday. The Sidewalk-A-Thon is a one-mile walk in the Spring Hill community.

The Village of Spring Hill is trying to raise $30,000 this year, in order to receive a matching grant from the Alabama Department of Transportation.

The organization has already built a million dollars worth of sidewalks up and down Old Shell Road, as well as some on McGregor Avenue. The money raised this year, will go toward continuing sidewalks on Old Shell Road, toward the University of South Alabama, and on Bit and Spur Road.

According to a press release from the Village of Spring Hill: "The Sidewalk-A-Thon is all about community involvement," explains Sherry Pierce. "It is a grassroots effort led by the children to raise funds for more sidewalks. Children walk door to door soliciting donations, as well as hold lemonade sales and host other fundraisers. Local schools provide opportunities, like 'Sneakers for Sidewalks,' for their students to participate in this effort. Civic-minded businesses and individuals with deep ties to the community support this event through sponsorships and tax-deductible donations. Hundreds of individuals come out with strollers and wagons to walk the one-mile route together in order to show support for this much-anticipated annual community event."

The entire community is invited to participate in the Sidewalk-A-Thon, this Friday. Registration begins at 3 PM in the field, behind the Moorer Branch Library on McGregor Avenue. The one-mile walk starts at 4 PM. There will be a finish line party at Dorn Field with food, drinks, and entertainment afterward.
