1 dog killed by MPD officer in shooting, 7 puppies seized by police

MOBILE, AL (WKRG) - At least one dog is dead after being shot by a Mobile Police Officer who may have also shot himself while serving drug warrants in Mobile on Friday.

A team of officers serving warrants in the area of Oak Street and St. Madar Street encountered pitbulls at one of the residences and reportedly opened fire after being attacked.  The gunfire resulted in the death of at least one pitbull and the gunshot wound of one of the officers.

Seven puppies, appearing to all be young pitbulls, were seized by police.  Their condition and whereabouts are unknown at this time.  We are expecting more details at a 3:00pm press conference.

The officer, who is not being identified due to his undercover status, is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries to his lower left leg at USA Medical Center.  The wound is believed to be the result of either self-inflicted gunfire or friendly fire from his fellow officer.
