Police identify man who drowned in Causeway incident

(WKRG) - Spanish Fort Police tell News Five Amos Lee Rudolph Junior took off, running into the water off the Causeway.
Rudolph's latest mug shot is from November of last year. He's been arrested in Mobile County about a dozen times over the last seven years.

Paula Barnhill said she was driving on the Causeway to mobile when she noticed flashing lights. She said, "We saw a couple of police cars with a small car stopped on the side of the road and it had the small car wedged between two police cars."

She told News Five, she and her husband had no idea what was happening. But when she saw police cars later when she was coming back across the bay, she knew something serious was going on. Barnhill said, "I thought it was strange that the cars were still there and they were still searching for him."

Spanish Fort PD say responded to the Dollar General off Highway 225 for a report of shoplifting. Police say 25-year-old Amos Lee Rudolph Junior stole a pack of cigarettes. When an officer later saw a car matching the description, the officer pulled over the car. That's when police say Rudolph took off.

SFPD Captain David Edgar said, "Another officer came to this location and they were trying to apprehend the suspect at which time he jumped into the water and attempted to swim." Edgar said officers tried to get Rudolph to get out of the water. He said, "He was obviously in distress. Officers tried to throw out rescue disks that we carry in our vehicles to him. They were unable to do so because of the distance he was to the shore."

Edgar added wind was also a problem for officers trying to help Rudolph who ultimately went under water and never resurfaced. Police called Daphne Search and Rescue and the Alabama State Troopers Marine Division to help recover Rudolph's body.

Spanish Fort Police told News Five the investigation into this case is continuing. The department is looking into the circumstances surrounding Rudolph's death and will report those findings to the Baldwin County District Attorney.

The following is a release from Spanish Fort Police,

The deceased individual pulled from Pass Picada earlier today has been identified as Amos Lee Rudolph, Jr., a 25 year old male, from Mobile. An autopsy will be performed by the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death will continue and the findings will be presented to the Baldwin County District Attorney for review by a Baldwin County Grand Jury.
