Mobile Baykeeper reports more Daphne Utility sewage violations

BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. (WKRG) - Late last year, Mobile Baykeeper filed a lawsuit against Daphne Utilities claiming the utility fraudulently reported and failed to report sewage spills into Mobile Bay.

Since then, Baykeeper says it has uncovered even more violations.  The organization says an investigation revealed in January 2018 that the Daphne Utilities released more than 3 million gallons of partially treated sewage every day of the month.

In a statement, Baykeeper Executive Director Casi Callaway said, "After filing the initial lawsuit, we hoped we would begin to see some improvements. Instead, our investigations show that Daphne Utilities is dumping millions of gallons of sewage pollution into Mobile Bay every single day."

Baykeeper says it discovered 25 instances of raw sewage being released into Mobile Bay between September and December of last year, with some bacteria levels too high to measure.

Two former employees of Daphne Utilities who provided information for the Baykeeper investigation are set for depositions in the lawsuit against Daphne Utilities Thursday.

Daphne Utilities has not yet responded to a call for comment about this story.
