Man Arrested for Assaulting Fire Chief While Trying to Help

APPLETON, Ala. (WKRG) - A man is in jail in Escambia County, Alabama for assaulting a Fire Chief who was trying to help the man's wife.

Appleton Fire Chief Mike Tyler responded to a call of a woman with difficulty breathing.  When he arrived at the home, he found Chris Smith giving CPR to his wife on the ground.

Escambia County Deputies say when Tyler rushed to help clear her airway, Smith assaulted him.  Tyler suffered a cracked eye socket and facial lacerations.

Smith then tried to run from the scene in a vehicle.  Deputies say as other firefighters arrived at the scene Smith ran his vehicle into their's causing significant damage. Smith was stopped from leaving the scene by Escambia County Deputies.

Chief Deputy Mike Lambert says Smith was out on bond for other charges when arrested.  He has a bond hearing today but the District Attorney is making a motion to revoke his bond.

Smith is charged with Assault First Degree and Criminal Mischief.

Deputies say his wife, who they have not yet identified, died at the scene.  Deputies say they are not yet calling this a homicide but are continuing to investigate.
