Drinking On The Streets Of Downtown Fairhope Could Become Legal

FAIRHOPE, AL- Several restaurant and bar owners in downtown Fairhope have asked the city council to consider creating an entertainment district.

It's illegal, both at the state and the city level, to leave a bar with a drink and walk around downtown. The Alabama Beverage Control Board has fined several establishments in recent weeks.

An entertainment district would allow patrons to leave bars and restaurants with an open container.

If an entertainment district is created, only pre-approved to-go cups would be used and the district would only apply to a specific, geographical area in downtown Fairhope.

The city council will hold at least one public hearing on the issue and could vote on the entertainment district in October.
