64 Pounds of Marijuana Discovered During I-10 Traffic Stop in Baldwin County

WKRG Staff - BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. (WKRG) -- A man is facing drug trafficking charges in Baldwin County after deputies say they found 64 pounds of marijuana in his vehicle.

Deputies conducted a traffic stop on Mario Sanchez on I-10 eastbound on Saturday. Sanchez claimed he was traveling to Miami from California to "sell olive oil and deliver presents," according to a press release from the sheriff's office.

Deputies searched the vehicle after they say they smelled a heavy odor of marijuana during the stop. The vehicle contained clothing items, Christmas items, coffee bags, four Pelican cases and a duffle bag. According to deputies, Sanchez was taking the Pelican cases "to an unknown person, for a friend of a friend in California".

The duffel bags and Pelican cases contained 64 pounds of marijuana covered in coffee beans, the sheriff's said.

During an interview, deputies say Sanchez told them he was receiving $2,000 from a man named Brian to transport the cases, but denied knowledge of the marijuana.
