UPDATE: Police Say Woman Shot While Helping Man and His Dog

WKRG Staff - Update: 4:00 p.m. 

A spokesperson for Chickasaw Fire Department has told News 5 that during the local Christmas parade, a man and his small dog were attacked by two other dogs. Officials say the man tried to ward off the two dogs, but was bitten several times in the process. Chickasaw Public Safety Director Chris McLean says several people in the area came to assist the man. According to McLean, one woman who came to help was able to grab one of the dogs that was attacking. At that point police say, the man pulled out a gun and shot, hitting the woman in the hand.

It is unknown at this time if the dogs have an owner or if they were strays.

The man was transported to the hospital with bite wounds and the female was transported to the hospital with a gun shot wound to the hand.

CHICKASAW, Ala. (WKRG) -- A spokesperson for the Chickasaw Fire Department confirms one person has been shot just outside city hall.

The Chickasaw Christmas parade started at 3:00 p.m. at Chickasaw High School near City Hall.

A witness tells News Five that multiple police patrol cars responded to the scene, along with an ambulance.
