PHOTOS: Viewer captures pictures of flying rays in Orange Beach

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. (WKRG) - News five viewer Elizabeth Watson Simpkins witnessed an incredible and rare site. Luckily, she was able to catch it on camera.

Stimpkins, of Grand Bay, was visiting Flora-Bama in Orange Beach with her husband Friday afternoon when she noticed rays jumping from the water. She snapped photos of the rays and sent them to us to share with the world.

The rays are known as manta, mobula, devil or flying rays. They can jump up to six feet above the ocean's surface and often flip before belly-flopping back into the water, according to the National Geographic. Rays will jump to communicate, get rid of parasites or show off for a potential mate.

The photos show rays jumping from the water and appearing to fly through the sky before belly-flopping back into the water.
