Downtown entertainment district being considered in Foley

FOLEY, Ala. (WKRG) - Downtown, it can be the heartbeat of a community.

But in Foley, the two major roadways intersect carrying tons of traffic a day.  "One of our greatest assets are the people that come through on our roads," says City Councilman Charlie Ebert.  "It's also one of our biggest hurdles dealing with traffic on 59 and 98."

Entertainment districts are designated as areas where folks can walk from bar to bar with drinks in hand.

In Foley, in order to meet state requirements, the proposed district would cross both Highway 59 and U.S. Highway 98. That configuration is a concern for businesses included in the district and the possible liability they could face should something go wrong.  But it could also be a huge economic driver for the downtown area.  "If we can do things to help our downtown and those businesses we want to look at those ideas. If this turns out to be something that is not the best fit for Foley due to our traffic and roads that come through town, then certainly that will be taken into consideration."

Discussions are just getting started and all options are open at this point. If the city decides to move forward with the entertainment district it could be three or four months at the earliest that it would be established.
