MONTGOMERY – Governor Bob Riley unveiled the official “Year of Alabama Sports” brochure today to coincide with the 2008 Tourism Department Campaign. Visitors to the state can quickly find information on everything from sports museums and NASCAR, to college and high school football, tennis, golf and fishing destinations in the 24-panel, full color brochure.

The guide lists more than 100 sports facts, events, destinations and attractions throughout the state and provides travelers with highlights, dates, contact information and Web addresses. Some of the attractions listed in the brochure include the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in Birmingham showcasing the state’s sports legends, the Paul W. Bryant Museum in Tuscaloosa that pays tribute to the legendary coach, the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail designated as some of the “best golf on earth” by the New York Times, the Talladega Superspeedway – home to NASCAR in Alabama – and the Barber Motorsports Museum – home to more than 1160 motorcycles and America’s only Porsche Sport Driving School.

“Alabama is a popular destination for sports fans and this brochure puts a wealth of sports information right at their fingertips,” said Governor Riley. “This brochure has something for every sports enthusiast.”

The brochure also provides a snapshot of many other sports such as the Copeland-Cox Mobile Tennis Center in Mobile – touted the nation’s best public tennis facility – the Pro Classic tennis tournament in Dothan, fishing spots across the state and the American Bass Anglers Tournament Trail, the Senior Bowl Regatta, triathlons, gymnastics and more.

“Alabama can be considered a sports haven when it comes to sports history and our state is home to many world-class sporting events,” said Year of Sports Coordinator Marilyn Jones Stamps. "This brochure is simply our way of showcasing the state’s unique portfolio of sporting venues and unbeatable sporting experiences in one handy package for travelers,” Stamps added.

“We hope this publication will provide travelers with enough information to entice them to come to Alabama to see the wealth of sports destinations and attractions,” said Governor Riley. “We also hope those living here will find something new and exciting to plan their next trip within the state.”

The brochure is a companion piece to the 2008 Vacation Guide and 2008 Calendar of Events and can be ordered by calling 1-800-ALABAMA (252-2262). A copy can also be downloaded or travelers can pick up a copy at any welcome center throughout the state.
