8 Days to Florida GOP Primary, McCain and Romney Consolidate Support: In a Republican Primary in Florida today, 8 days to the 01/29/08 vote, John McCain and Mitt Romney are effectively tied, a dozen points ahead of Rudolph Giuliani and Mike Huckabee, who battle for 3rd place, according to SurveyUSA's 8th tracking poll, conducted exclusively for WFLA-TV Tampa and WKRG-TV Mobile. In interviews conducted after Fred Thompson withdrew from the race, but before Republicans debated in Boca Raton late on 1/24/08, the race stands: McCain 30%, Romney 28%, Giuliani 18%, Huckabee 14%, Ron Paul 6%. Compared to SurveyUSA's most recent release, 4 days ago, before Thompson withdrew, McCain is up 5, Romney is up 9, Giuliani is down 2, Huckabee is flat. Among Conservatives, Romney leads McCain by 9 points. Among Moderates, McCain leads Giuliani by 16 points. McCain leads by 18 in SE FL and by 28 in NW FL. McCain and Romney are tied in SW FL. Romney leads by 13 in Central FL and 16 in NE FL.

29% Have Already Voted: 2,100 Florida adults were interviewed by SurveyUSA 01/23/08 and 01/24/08. Interviews were completed immediately before the Republican debate began at 9 pm ET on 01/24/08. The impact of that debate is not reflected in these numbers. Of the adults, 1,795 were registered to vote. Of them, 550 were determined by SurveyUSA to have already voted in the Florida Republican Primary, or to be likely to vote on or before 01/29/08. Of the 29% who tell SurveyUSA they have already voted, Romney and McCain are tied, 30% each.
