"destination weddings," the Mississippi House has voted to
eliminate the three-day waiting period to get a marriage license.
The bill moves to the Senate for more work.
House Tourism Committee Chairwoman Diane Peranich of Pass
Christian says some couples are willing to spend $20,000 on
weddings and it makes sense for Mississippi to accommodate their
plans.
Under current law, a couple has to take a blood test for
syphilis and then wait three days before getting a marriage license
from the county circuit clerk.
The bill passed today (Wednesday) would keep the blood test
requirement but would allow a couple to get a marriage license they
same day they apply for it.
Peranich says some out-of-state couples who want to get married
in Mississippi must now spend extra money for hotel rooms because
of the three-day waiting period.
