At the end of the Spring semester, dozens of students and families renting homes from the University of South Alabama will have to move out.
Earlier this month, the school sent notices to those living in 19 homes in the Hillsdale community.

Some students contacted News Five saying they felt like they were being forced out of their homes without much notice.

A spokesperson said that the housing department actually warned students about the possibility of having to leave years ago.
"Five years ago we had 700 houses in Hillsdale. Now we're down to about 150 houses. So this is not something that started suddenly. This is just something that we've been gradually doing over the last five years. So it's not a sudden movement it was approved by our board of trustees in 2004, I believe," said University of South Alabama spokesperson Keith Ayers.

USA says it is getting out of the single family housing rental business. Eventually all the u-s-a rental homes will be torn down.

News Five has also learned that once the homes are torn down, the land will be used for the new Jags football team field house and storage facility.

These people have been coddled for so long that it’s to the point where they expect it.  You mean, they have to pay what EVERYONE else has to pay for rent now?  How absurd! Believe it or not, the university is not here to baby you and cater to your every need.  If you can’t afford housing or tuition, then that’s your problem, not the university’s.  I get so sick of hearing people whine about their situation.  You know what?  You’re the one that put yourself in that situation!  Maybe you shouldn’t have gotten married at 19.  Maybe you shouldn’t have had kids at 18.  You want to go to school?  Great, good for you.  But how about you work your butt off to make it happen instead of expecting to be given a free (or discounted) ride just because of the situation that YOU put YOURSELF in.  There are PLENTY of people that work 40 hours a week AND go to school.  Join the club instead of whining about how inconvenient that might be for you.

Section 8 would be an option if they were taking applications, but as they currently have over 3,000 applicants waiting on housing, they are unable to offer assistance at this time.

I wish I could have rent that was only $250 per month.  And if you are that bad off apply for Section 8 housing that is what it is there for.

Apparently, its has not occurred to several of you that dormitories DO NOT cater to HETEROSEXUAL couples/marriages, as they only allow SAME-SEX ROOMMATES and NO CHILDREN. And while the Grove does allow a husband and wife to live together (granted they provide a copy of the marriage certificate), they are charged $465 PER ROOM for a two bedroom apartment. I am a full time student, and I work very hard as a manager in the food service industry 30 hours a week, as this kind of jobs can cater to the flexible hours that I, as a student, require. I suppose I could get a grueling 40 hour a week job at Wal-Mart, but I guarantee that with those hours, I would not have the study time to allow me to make the Dean’s List every semester as I currently am doing. And for those of you who suggest that we are low lifes that should “aspire to move up” I feel like I must remind you that roof over your head is a roof over your head no matter how fancy it is. And as an intelligent student, I know better than to throw my money away on a $900/month paper-thin walled apartment when I can live in a three bedroom house for $265/month.

Amber Marie, Good for you. Nothing like hard work to make your life better. I support the football program as well. It’s not about just a football team, it’s about the excitement we see in the community, more students and more scholarships, Plus better living spaces for students.

Low income housing has not worked, never has and never will. It’s not a good idea to congregate the have littles.  Housing authorities in other countries learned this yeas ago and dismantled their projects. Hillsdale was gross when my husband lived there, disgusting when I was first a student and dangerous now.

Everyone was given fair warning. Plenty of it. There are other places to live in the area, aspire to move up to them.

First of all. THe students were surveyed. Everything that was required from the school board was done, by the students, before it went up for voting. Its was done fair and square.

And I am so sick of hearing people complain about the low income students. $150 a semester… thats it. I am sorry, but if that $150 is going to make my school a better school then so be it. It will give lots of kids opportunites to go to school on scholarship that couldn’t other wise.
Besides… its only $150 dollars. If your job is so bad that you can’t cough up an extra $40 a month. Then you seriously need to get a new one. I am a low income student, no financial aid, no parents helping, nothing. And I find paying tuition a breeze as long as I have a savings account and another $150 a semester won’t bother me at all…

That said. I am glad they are getting rid of those homes. There will be a much better income for the school as a whole in that area now.

I think they should tear down Hillsdale housing.  With the new Grove apartments and the other housing on campus students still have alot of places they can move.

The students’ opinions on the football team were ignored.  Now the students are ignored in this situation as well.  Perhaps it should finally be realized that the alumni of South Alabama don’t actually matter as much as the people who are going to South.  You can’t have a university without students, afterall.

Also, take note:  the football team is an entertainment endeavour.  Some of the low-income students at South Alabama who are working toward actually getting a degree, and doing something important with their lives, are going to get kicked out and may be forced to spend all their school money on trying to survive in other housing around here.  Seems like this is another case of sports being more valued than actual education.

It is time that USA quit supporting low income housing. The money they flushed down the drains in Hillsdale would be better spent on a childcare/preschool program for students and staff.
