Earlier this month, the school sent notices to those living in 19 homes in the Hillsdale community.
Some students contacted News Five saying they felt like they were being forced out of their homes without much notice.
A spokesperson said that the housing department actually warned students about the possibility of having to leave years ago.
"Five years ago we had 700 houses in Hillsdale. Now we're down to about 150 houses. So this is not something that started suddenly. This is just something that we've been gradually doing over the last five years. So it's not a sudden movement it was approved by our board of trustees in 2004, I believe," said University of South Alabama spokesperson Keith Ayers.
USA says it is getting out of the single family housing rental business. Eventually all the u-s-a rental homes will be torn down.
News Five has also learned that once the homes are torn down, the land will be used for the new Jags football team field house and storage facility.

AL Needs More Aid For Katrina Recovery

The building on University north of the old Alpha dorms is the Allied Health building. The new building they just broke ground for across from Stanky field, along Old Shell Road, is the Rec center. The building going up on Old Shell with the doors framed in front of the soccer field will house the the new locker rooms and bathrooms for soccer and softball. Football practice fields will have practice fields and a possible temp field house in part of Hillsdale, west of the intramural fields. For now, we are going to play our football games at LADD stadium.
