University of North Carolina student leader is now charged with
killing a graduate student at Duke University.
Seventeen-year-old Lawrence Lovette of Durham is facing
first-degree murder charges in the death of the Duke student,
Abhijit Mahato. The additional charges came after Lovette
surrendered to authorities investigating the death of UNC student
body president Eve Carson.
It's not clear if the two cases are related, although robbery
was involved in both killings.
Mahato was a doctoral student. He was found shot to death inside
his apartment near the Duke campus in January. A 19-year-old is
already being held without bail in his killing. Stephen Oates is
charged with murder, and robbing 18 people, including Mahato.
Carson was found lying in a street about a mile from the UNC
Chapel Hill campus last week. The biology and political science
student had been shot several times, including once in the head.
Twenty-one-year-old Demario Atwater is also charged in Carson's
killing. Authorities say Atwater and Lovette are were caught in
surveillance photos trying use her ATM card.
