LOS ANGELES (AP) — Miley Cyrus is taking issue with a photo of herself that's going around, and it's not another amateur, truth-or-dare Internet snapshot — it's the handiwork of Annie Leibovitz.

"I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be 'artistic' and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed," Cyrus said Sunday in a statement through her publicist. "I never intended for any of this to happen and I apologize to my fans who I care so deeply about."

The photos, appearing in the upcoming issue of Vanity Fair, were taken by Leibovitz, a renowned celebrity photographer whose edgy, silver-toned portraits have included subjects such as Angelina Jolie, Scarlett Johansson and a naked, pregnant Demi Moore.

The Cyrus pictures accompany an interview with the 15-year-old pop star and her father, singer Billy Ray Cyrus. They include shots of the teen wrapped in what appears to be a satin bedsheet, looking over her shoulder with her back exposed.

The Disney Channel, which airs Cyrus' TV show "Hannah Montana," was also critical of Vanity Fair.

"Unfortunately, as the article suggests, a situation was created to deliberately manipulate a 15-year-old in order to sell magazines," a network statement said.

A phone message left for a Vanity Fair representative was not immediately returned Sunday night. But in a statement to the TV show "Entertainment Tonight," Vanity Fair defended its position.

"Miley's parents and/or minders were on the set all day," the magazine said. "Since the photo was taken digitally, they saw it on the shoot and everyone thought it was a beautiful and natural portrait of Miley."

In a caption released by Vanity Fair with the photo last week, Cyrus expressed her comfort with how the apparently topless picture turned out.

"I think it's really artsy," she told the magazine at the time. "It wasn't in a skanky way. Annie took, like, a beautiful shot, and I thought that was really cool. That's what she wanted me to do, and you can't say no to Annie."

A handful of borderline racy snapshots of a girl who appeared to be Cyrus have appeared on the Internet in recent months, including images of a girl posing in her underwear and bikini last week.

Cyrus is one of the biggest — and most G-rated — acts in the country and is often considered a role model for young girls. Her "Best of Both Worlds" tour sold out arenas, and her successful 3-D concert film collected $31.3 million in its opening weekend in February

bgprv, I can’t even think of a reply to your last post.  Since the invention of the something called the television, parents have a hard row to hoe being role models. I would love to be the perfect parent you are. So you would have no problem with your daughters posing like that?

Child abuse laws and the willingness to enforce them vary from state to state and city to city. There have been cases brought to court because they took pictures of their kids in the bath tub or the child’s little swimming pools while bathing naked. The laws can go from one extreme to the other just like the willingness to enforce them. A parent doesn’t need to be and can not be with their 15 year old 100% of the time, they just need to check on their child often during the day, just for the child’s safety and their peace of mind. It seems to me that some adult had to sign something for this to occur, and to give permission for this to happen since this young girl is a minor. We all have our opinions and this is mine,no hate or anger for anyone of a different opinion, just care for a young girl.

If these pictures constitute child abuse, then why haven’t the people responsible for these pictures been arrested?  As for Miley’s parents, I wouldn’t be so quick to throw blame on them. No parent is around their 15 year old child 100% of the time.

Well some of that is correct, Most people in her audience will be in that general age group. Will they care? You bet they will, and they learn fast at that age. They will see their Idol selling pictures of her partially nude body to make money for her self and a magazine and think this must be ok if Miley does it. I’m sure the child sexual predators out there think it’s ok too and snap up a couple of copies of the magazine. This is just another form of child abuse ,a child can not give permission to be abused! If trying to prevent a young girl from going down the wrong path as a child makes me a loser then I’m a happy loser. Hate has nothing to do with it,I certainly don’t hate her, she’s a child. This has to do with her parents more than miley and them willing to sell her for money and fame. Well this loser and hate monger gotta go now,you kids have a good day and think before you act.

sweetandsour, sno-babe, losers? Do you have any morals? More skin does show at the beach, but it is not someone as popular as this young lady. It doesn’t matter what age the audience is, they will emulate her actions. Trying to grow up to fast. What is a hater? The last statement of your post “bunch of 7-year-olds and all they’re going to do is not care. and even if they do they’re probably not going to notice it’s sexy at all… “
The word sexy and 7 year olds should not even be used in the same sentence. What is wrong with yall?

Amen, that’s what I said...it’s no worse than a bathing suit or these new prom dresses. It is kind of ridiculous how out of hand this whole thing has become, Lets see, the audience that watches her is a bunch of 7-year-olds and all they’re going to do is not care. and even if they do they’re probably not going to notice it’s sexy at all…

Oh stop it and leave her alone.  Any loser that thinks that is a big deal needs to go to the beach and realize that there are far more body parts showing on the beach than she has shown in the artistic photo of herself.  People that think this is a big deal are just being haters.  Go get a life.

I don’t think this is the time to back off! This is a child ,a juvenile, a child that still needs parental supervision until she gets to legal age to make decisions on her own. Miley is in the position to influence thousands of young kids by her every actions. She accepted the responsibility of showing her young fans a good clean image and a life with morales when she accepted millions of these kids dollars. Yes she did make a mistake and I hope she learned from it,But what is more disturbing than what miley did is that the parents let it occur! The only reasons I can think of ,that her parents would let this happen is, to busy to provide supervision or the quest for more money, either one doesn’t bode well for miley’s home life and supervision until she’s an adult,But this a public forum so speak you thoughts.

The person just below me is female.  I’d like to make that comment, because it does add to the hilarity.  Seriously though, leave Hannah alone.  She’s growing up, just like every other 15 year, and she doesn’t go online to find things about me so she can make fun.  So relax, now that she’s learned, leave her alone.
