LOS ANGELES (AP) — Miley Cyrus is taking issue with a photo of herself that's going around, and it's not another amateur, truth-or-dare Internet snapshot — it's the handiwork of Annie Leibovitz.

"I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be 'artistic' and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed," Cyrus said Sunday in a statement through her publicist. "I never intended for any of this to happen and I apologize to my fans who I care so deeply about."

The photos, appearing in the upcoming issue of Vanity Fair, were taken by Leibovitz, a renowned celebrity photographer whose edgy, silver-toned portraits have included subjects such as Angelina Jolie, Scarlett Johansson and a naked, pregnant Demi Moore.

The Cyrus pictures accompany an interview with the 15-year-old pop star and her father, singer Billy Ray Cyrus. They include shots of the teen wrapped in what appears to be a satin bedsheet, looking over her shoulder with her back exposed.

The Disney Channel, which airs Cyrus' TV show "Hannah Montana," was also critical of Vanity Fair.

"Unfortunately, as the article suggests, a situation was created to deliberately manipulate a 15-year-old in order to sell magazines," a network statement said.

A phone message left for a Vanity Fair representative was not immediately returned Sunday night. But in a statement to the TV show "Entertainment Tonight," Vanity Fair defended its position.

"Miley's parents and/or minders were on the set all day," the magazine said. "Since the photo was taken digitally, they saw it on the shoot and everyone thought it was a beautiful and natural portrait of Miley."

In a caption released by Vanity Fair with the photo last week, Cyrus expressed her comfort with how the apparently topless picture turned out.

"I think it's really artsy," she told the magazine at the time. "It wasn't in a skanky way. Annie took, like, a beautiful shot, and I thought that was really cool. That's what she wanted me to do, and you can't say no to Annie."

A handful of borderline racy snapshots of a girl who appeared to be Cyrus have appeared on the Internet in recent months, including images of a girl posing in her underwear and bikini last week.

Cyrus is one of the biggest — and most G-rated — acts in the country and is often considered a role model for young girls. Her "Best of Both Worlds" tour sold out arenas, and her successful 3-D concert film collected $31.3 million in its opening weekend in February

Help me here,Laura Bobby,I’m having a hard time understanding your last comments.Are you saying there are a lot of young girls out there doing much worse because no one spoke up and tried to stop it before it got worse,and if you do speak up and try to stop it you will drive these other young girls to do worse? I care what happens to these kids and so do a lot of other people out there also.I have devoted a lot of my time to a few of these young girls to try to prevent them from going down,in my opinion,the wrong path. I make decisions based on what has happened most of the times in the past(decisions or judgements).Miley hasn’t had enough experience to do so,she’s a minor.Pictures can be very wrong,that’s why we have pornographic laws. I don’t think this picture meets that standard but it could lead to some that would later.Most ,if not all of this rests on the parents.They must have given approval for this to happen.You have a good day Laura and try to help some of these girls.

Everyone making big deal over nothing. There are so many 15 and 16 year old girls doing much worse and no one cares because they are not in public eye. There is nothing wrong with pictures and I cannot believe that everyone is judgemental. She has never done anything bad as far as I have seen and the public will scrutinize and find something and talk about it until it drives all these young girls to do worse things. I wish everyone would get a life and leave her and her family alone. Leave it alone or she will be the next Britney or Lindsey Lohan. She is on the right path…. just let her walk it.

I read your comments BIGPRV,but I might have misread your intent.I try to read all replies and try to see things from their point of view to better understand those replying. In my earlier posting I used the word “hate”,I shouldn’t have,I should have used"anger”.I don’t like the word hate,MY BAD.Most times it’s hard to put in to words what you’re trying to say and feel and being angry makes it even harder and anger does bad things to your body,and you want to be around for a long time for those two young girls of your’s.Go play with those kids and enjoy them before they grow up and are gone.Some of mine are in their fortys now and I still think of them as kids some times.BYE

did you really read my comments i discuss things with my kid because that i what parents do, i do not have hate if i do that is also portrayed by the people here that are just making statements so then if that is the case then i am making a statement, you are entitled to youre opinion just like i have an opinion on you. i said myself people are in uproar because they think its like kiddy porn and i dint ask my daughters that if they thnik it is kiddy porn, i guess you just read to much in to my post…........

My My My ! Where did you pick up all that hate from BIGPRV? what is it that gets you so upset when people have a different opinion than your’s so much so that you have to call them names? Lose all that hate it’ll make you sick. I don’t think the picture of Miley is kiddie porn,but it is close,too close for a young girl of that age. I don’t think parents should be telling their kids that it is ok to do anything for money.In my opinion that is not the message you want to send to your kids. As for judging people,you do that every day of your life,it’s called liking someone or dislikeing someone,friend or foe.Of the 13 children that have called this place home,I have never asked one of them if they thought a picture was racy or porn,I always made those decisions my self.That’s why they call it parenting. Come on BIGprv,don’t be asking a 5 year old and a 11 year old for advice,they’ll be thinking your a push over!
