TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - A bill designed to weed out sexually
and physically abusive teachers by creating statewide standards for
hiring, screening and reporting misconduct passed in the House.
It would bring uniformity to widely differing local standards
and prohibit schools districts from entering confidentiality
agreements with teachers who get in trouble.
The Senate previously passed the bill, but it'll go back there.
That's because the House amended it to include a provision that
would deny state pensions to any public employees or officials, not
just teachers, convicted of sex crimes against minors.
The House voted 118-0 for the bill (SB 1712). If the Senate agrees with the changes it'll go to the governor.
