All is calm on campus at Davidson High School while students try to cope with a day, they'll never forget. "It was a shock to know that someone from our school killed themselves in front of everybody," Said Jerelon Chambers, a 9th grade student. According to Mobile Police it was 18-year-old Jajuan Holmes. Authorities say the student walked into the school's gym around eleven this morning (Thursday) pulled out a pistol and fired one shot in the ceiling, before turning the gun on himself and taking his own life. "My friend that was in there he said that he saw the dude, put his gun to his head and when he did that he had ran and he came back and told us," Said Chambers.
Several students we spoke with shortly after class was let out shared similar stories. Like 10th grader Terrell McCants who says he didn't witness the shooting, but later found out through faculty. "They said it was an incident that happened in the gym and it was all cleaned up." School officials didn't cancel classes, but students were allowed to go home, if a parent came to sign them out. "If you could get everything back to the most normal state that you can get it back to, right away as soon as possible that's going to help everybody, " Said Nancy Pierce, a spokeswoman for Mobile County Schools.
But for those who had to stay, it was hard to concentrate on anything else. "I wanted to go home, because i wanted to be home with my mama. But my sister came up to get me but the line was too long and they wouldn't let us come back out of class," Said Marshay Edwards a 9th grade student. But after an emotionally draining day, some students are trying to focus on what a new school day will bring. Davidson School officials say school will resume tomorrow (Friday).
