New 5 viewers have debated on wkrg.com whether the gun a student brought to Clark School of Math, Science and Technology on Monday was loaded or not.
As we reported earlier, Mobile County school officials say the gun, found in the student's book bag, was loaded.

The child's mother contacted News 5 to say school officials were misinformed. She says her son had the gun and a loaded clip in his book bag, but claims the clip was never in the gun.

News 5 investigated her claims. Chickasaw police could not confirm whether the loaded clip was ever in fact in the gun. But Sgt. Gerald Thornton said it doesn't matter. As far as the law is concerned, a loaded clip is the same thing as a loaded gun.

Other viewers said the student would've automatically been charged with a felony, if the gun had been loaded. Not true says Thornton. Possession of a fire arm on school grounds is not an automatic felony. Thornton said the student would only be charged with a felony if he had a prior record.

An eighth grade student at Clark School of Math, Science, and Technology in Chickasaw has been arrested for bringing a loaded gun to school.
School officials say the gun belongs to the child's father.
Several classmates found out that the child had the gun.. and alerted teachers.
In a letter to parents, the school's principal said the student hid the gun in his backpack.
News 5 was told the school did not go into lockdown because there was no immediate danger.
One parent told News 5 that the school should have told them about what happened yesterday...not today.
"If I hadn't called, If my son hadn't said anything, I wouldn't have known. I wouldn't known. I would've thought it had just been a normal day," said parent Demetria Clark.
"This is something we may have to figure out a better way to handle to let parents know, how soon to let parents know, etcetera," said Mobile County Public School System spokesperson Nancy Pierce.
The student has been arrested and won't be allowed to return..
School officials say the student hasn't had any past disciplinary problems.

Being a parent in this day and age is not an easy task whatsoever.  In fact, being a parent in my mother’s day wasn’t all that easy either, but we got through it okay.  One of my sons has had his share of problems adjusting to life, so I am the last to condemn another parent.  However, it is a little troubling that a parent would try to minimize the severity of this situation and use the old standard that he is not the only kid at that school with a loaded gun; he is just the one that got caught.

That is down right frightening!

I’m very upset about this story, but I think it’s getting a little out of hand when you are downgrading a mother stating “what kind of morals are you ininstilling in him that makes him think he has to take a gun to school to look cool.” I agree with some of the points you have SumOneILove, but you know nothing about this lady to make a statement like that. As a mother, I know I try to install good morals in my children by talking to them and by an example for them. But as parents, thats what we do, what the children do with those teachings is up to them. I’ve made alot of mistakes in my life, but it wasn’t because my parents didn’t teach me better.

If he were my kid, I would let him know that he violated a sacred trust we shared with each other and that cost him any privacy he once had in our home.  I would then turn his room upside down and see what else he had stashed away.  If he had a computer, I would also be checking that sucker to see what all is going on in his life.

I am more upset than you can possibly know. It is also disturbing to know that throughout this ordeal, I have not once spoken with the principle of our fine Blue Ribbon School. Apparently she doesn’t handle discipline problems. That’s a problem in itself. And as far as other kids go, maybe some of the parents that are so quick to criticize me should check their kids’ backpacks before they leave for school everyday. You can bet it will now be a part of our morning ritual.

Are you telling us it is routine for kids at that school to be packing heat?  That is disturbing and you should be as upset about that situation as any other parent! You should also be naming names before the schoolyard turns into the O.K. Corral!

Again, not defending my child. He was wrong, knew he was wrong, and is taking responsibility for his actions. As I said, he is not the only child that did it, just the only one that got caught. Are you absolutely sure that one of those other kids wasn’t yours? And as for the values I teach at home, my children are held accountable for their actions and are taught right and wrong. However, sometimes people make stupid decisions. Some of you have made stupid decisions by choosing to embellish an already terrible story.

Parents have a right to know when a gun is brought into their childs school.  Those of you criticizing wkrg for reporting it sorry.  To me it doesnt matter if a gun was loaded or unloaded… it is still a gun and still close to my child.  Just because it was not fired doesn’t make it all right!

Did your kid know the possible consequences of his actions?  Did he know about the zero tolerance policies concerning weapons on the school grounds?  Did he think those rules did not include him, or that the school officials were just joking?

Tell us how this all came about and what is being done about it now, please.

OH but i do know.. and ..sounds like you are defending him .... good job as a parent…. glad there are so many parents like you out there.  If he had no malicious intent he would not have brought a gun to school. Also what morals are you instilling in him that makes him think he has to take a gun to school to look cool.  I was at the school the day it happened thanks.

Ok, so it looks as if there is no accurate account of this story and that can only come from # people, the child, the detective and the mom.  Being the mom, I’m gonna clear this up for you.  As for the comment that there was also a mask, seriously, grow up. This is bad enough without ignorant people trying to make it worse. If you don’t know…Shut up!  The gun was not loaded and he had no malicious intent. He is not the first child to bring a gun just to “look cool”, just the first to get caught.  As for discipline and children, my children are punished, spanking is one of my methods and my children are typically well behaved young men. Am I defending him? NO! He was wrong, he made a stupid decision and he is being punished. His punishment is far worse than I could dish out and probably far worse than any of us can imagine. The gun did not come from my house, we have no guns in our home.  He got it on a visit to his dad. He is a child that made a stupid decision, have any of you?
