The results of the Mitchell investigation into the use of performance-enhancing substances by Major League Baseball players are raising an important question in Mobile.
Is there a problem with steroids and other similar substances among local high school and college players?
Blake Stein pitched in the Major Leagues five years ago and is now an assistant baseball coach at McGill-Toolen High School.
Stein says there aren't any steroid concerns at McGill-Toolen, but, "I do think that it is in the high schools. I would be naive to say that I wouldn't think it is. I don't know that for a fact, that's just my opinion."
Instead of drugs, Stein says student-athletes should get involved in weight programs.
University of South Alabama pitcher Brandon Sage says he's known two people in other programs that used steroids and regret it.
Sage said, "When you come off of it, it usually results in surgery in your arm and its lifelong."
But players understand there is a temptation.
USA Pitcher Eric Gonzalez says, "In athletics, everybody's going to know the best athlete. They want to be the best athlete and some people, of course, will take it."
Another USA pitcher, Chris Brown, says, "High school kids and college kids see professional athletes using it and look at them as a role model and figure if they're using it, why not them?"
