PENTAGON (AP) - The Pentagon is tracking the obliterated remainsof a dead spy satellite after a Navy missile connected with a
direct hit last night.
Joint Chiefs of Staff Vice Chairman James Cartwright says debris
is being tracked over both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans but it
appears none of it's big enough to cause any damage on Earth.
General Cartwright says there's an 80-to-90 percent chance the
missile hit exactly where it had to: the satellite's fuel tank. It
contained 1,000 pounds of hydrazine, which the Pentagon says could
have posed a threat to people if the tank had survived re-entry.
Cartwright told reporters this morning that experts are still
watching the debris fields and cannot absolutely rule out the
possibility that hazardous material will reach Earth.
