Unseasonably cold temperatures may have prompted people to take extreme measures to keep warm last night, and Mobile Fire investigators believe a space heater is to blame for an early morning apartment fire that caused approximately $65,000 in damage. Firefighters responded to a duplex on Next Street at 3:40 this morning. They found heavy smoke coming from one side of the building. According to Fire-Rescue, the blaze appears to have started in the bedroom and quickly spread through the entire apartment. Investigators found a space heater near the bed and wall. They also found debris, clothing, and other items which only helped fuel the fire. Trevis Moore told fire officials he woke up to find the foot of his bed on fire, and said he barely had enough time to escape. No one was injured in this morning's fire.
