MIAMI (AP) - Several groups are looking for a green light fortheir specialty license plates, but some lawmakers want to put on
the brakes on new designs.
Florida already has more than 100 different license plates
celebrating everything from the oceans to organ donation and the
Olympics. But this legislative session more than a half-dozen
specialty license plates have been proposed. Some lawmakers say the
proliferation of the plates is a problem, but others can't seem to
curb their enthusiasm for the tags.
Part of the reason for the explosion of tags is they're popular
with the public, and groups come to lawmakers requesting their own
designs. But some lawmakers argue that as the number of tags
increases, it becomes harder for law enforcement to quickly get
information from the tag.
Those lawmakers would like to place a three-year moratorium on
new plates issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
