Maria Villareal has a great solution for making her sun spots and dark acne scars vanish. She uses bleaching creams. They even out her skin tone, lighten freckles and eliminate other blemishes. Skin doctors have been suggesting these products to their patients for years, but now the FDA is considering banning those sold over-the-counter because a key ingredient, hydroquinone, has caused cancer in animal studies.
Dr. Heather Woolery-Lloyd doesn't believe the ban should happen just yet. "Although the FDA has been concerned about this based on the animal studies, it doesn't translate into the real life use of the product."
Before pulling the bleaching potions off store shelves, the
Dr. Woolery-Lloyd agrees, "I do think that it could be quite tragic if it's removed from the market because it's removing the only, one of the only effective treatments for this very common condition that women and men have."
As the FDA contemplates what to do, Maria is trying to figure out how to get the product if it's no longer available in the
Doctor Woolery-Lloyd expects some prescription options to remain, but they're expensive. There's no word at this point on when the potential ban might take place.
