Former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman expects to get out of a federal prison in Louisiana Friday morning.
A federal appeals court Thursday approved the former democratic governor's release on bond while he appeals his conviction in a corruption case.
Siegelman's attorney. Vince Kilborn of Mobile, said he talked with Siegelman after the appeals court decision was announced.
Kilborn said, "Of course he's ecstatic, looking forward to getting out, seeing his family. His wife and his daughter Dana are going up actually tonight (Thursday night) to spend the night and see him when they unlock the door in the morning."
News Five asked Mobile County Republican Party Chairman Mark Erwin his reaction to Siegelman's release.
Erwin said, "Its a court case, and there's a judge in charge, and the judge is going to make the decisions based on the facts and the issues being argued by the lawyers on behalf of the litigants. Obviously, the judge has made a decision."
Mobile attorney Robert Edington is a long time friend of Siegelman.
He says the former governor shouldn't have been put in prison in the first place while he's appealing his case.
Edington said, "He's (Siegelman) not likely to flee. He'll be right here. He's the former governor of the state. He has no place to go other than here. He's not going to leave Alabama."
Erwin said he trusts the judicial system to make the right judgement.
He said, "I think the judge is applying his experience in the law, I would trust. Whatever decisions he made, I would assume, based on everything he knew, which we don't, that he was making the right decision at the time."
