"Fuel's too high...the price of shrimp is low,"Says Nguyen. Nguyen says it costs him over $30,000 a month to fill up his 13,000 gallon tank, so he fears he may just break even. He says he is cutting costs where he can, including maintenance, which costs him $25,000 a year, just to keep his boat on the water. Right now only Nguyen and his brother tend to it.
Evan Seaman says that has been the case for many other shrimpers because of fuel costs. But for Seaman, it's how he earns his living. He says he's been losing work. "If you can't put fuel on the boat you can't catch shrimp, if you can't go out, nothing breaks, so we can't work on anything if they don't have anything broke,"Says Seaman.
Although shrimping season doesn't begin until May, many in the industry are dreading the summer. "They switch over from different types of fuel during the summer time, that just means fuel prices are going to go up even higher. And the higher the fuel prices...people can't make it, "Says Seaman.
