MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The decision by the Senate Ethics
Committee not to punish a senator for hitting another lawmaker
won't be the final word on the punch seen around the world.
Some senators said the legislative session starting tomorrow
needs to address security in the Senate and make sure there is not
a repeat of the punch that occurred on the last day of the 2007
legislative session.
Last June 7th, GOP Senator Charles Bishop of Jasper punched
Senator Lowell Barron, a Democrat from Fyffe, in the head while
both were talking in the Senate chamber during a recess. The blow
was captured by Alabama Public Television and was seen on newscasts
around the world and remains a popular video on YouTube.
On Thursday, the Senate Ethics Committee decided not to take any
disciplinary action against Bishop. The five-member could not come
to a consensus and closed the matter.
Bishop said today he wishes the Ethics Committee had made it
clear that verbal abuse, which he says prompted his blow, and
physical abuse would not be tolerated in the Senate chamber.
But he said continuing to discuss the matter in the new session
is not wise.

This really says a lot about the senate’s ethics committee,or maybe the lack of one.
