MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A proposed constitutional amendment to
remove the state sales tax from groceries cleared another
legislative hurdle today.
The Senate Finance and Taxation Committee voted 7-0 to approve
the proposed amendment, which passed the House earlier.
The measure now goes to the Senate. It would remove the state's
4 percent sales tax on groceries and replace the lost revenue by
eliminating the state income tax deduction for federal taxes paid.
If approved by the Senate, it will go on the general election
ballot November 4th to see if a majority of voters statewide will
put it into the Alabama Constitution.
The bill's sponsor, Montgomery Representative John Knight,
called the committee's vote an important step "toward tax
fairness."

I think this idea sucks bad ... definately a way to stick it to hardworking people.... i guess it pays to not go to college.....  let me stop saving for my childrens education fund so they will be provided for later.

asda,
A 10,400 dollar grocery bill last year, Consider yourself privileged most of us spent around 6,000.  I would probably scream too if i made 30,000 a year.  Fact is most people in alabama earn around 17,000 a year.  That 4% sales tax on groceries will help us buy clothes and buy medicine to keep us healthy.

Great another way to stick it to the Tax Payers --- The amount you are allowed in deductions for federal taxes would be taken away?  So if you spend $200 a week on groceries that would only amount to $468 worth of saving for a year.  I promise you get to claim alot more federal taxes paid than $468.  Last year I paid over $4000 in Federal taxes.  How is this going to help the citizens of Alabama?
