Police arrested 11 students after a brawl at a Monroe County high school. The fight happened Friday morning at J.F. Shields High School in Beatrice. We talked with one concerned parent who says this has been an ongoing problem at the school. Jennifer Betts says her son was one of the students who was arrested. She says she's tried talking to her son and school officials, now, she's turning to News 5 for help, "I'm scared somebody going to get killed before the end of school," said Betts. We tried to get the school's side of the story. We were referred to the Monroe County Board of Education, but the Monroe County Board of Education did not return our calls. Beatrice Police Chief Ray Norris says there will be zero tolerance when it comes to violence at the school. The 11 students arrested are charged with disorderly conduct. And until their hearing before a judge, Norris says they won't be allowed back on campus or at any school activities which includes the high school prom Saturday night.

Yes, Ms. Betts and her child are definitely at fault; however, she more than acknowledged that fact. She stated that she has talked to the administration as well as others about the issue. She is seeking help in all sources. She is trying to be responsible for her child’s actions but what about the actions of the other 10 kids. What are their parents doing to clear up this problem? She specifically stated that the adminstration as well as the other parents need to get together to put a stop to this. She can not do it alone. It takes a mighty big person to stand before the media to accept responsibility for her child’s part in this ordeal. Get the parents and students some help. They need better supervision and they need it immediately. Unless something is done, the next article you see or read may not be able to be mistaken for a “poor me publicity gimmick”.

Well, if not a publicity gimmick, then how about “not my (or my child’s) fault”.  I don’t doubt that there are problems in the school that need to be addressed; however, by her own admission, her son is a member of a gang.  Can the school be blamed for his gang affliation?  Sorry, but personal responsibility is almost non-existent today.  This is the same attitude that Mercede’s mother has exhibited in the video-taped beating in Florida - the victim “asked for it”.

I wouldn’t classify this as a publicity gimmick. This issue needs to be publicized. This is a cry for help. Is there anyone actually listening? This happens to be a school that consists of 100% African American and it appears as if no one cares about their well-being.  The administrators are not effective. As we should know, an entity is only as strong and productive as the person and/or persons in charge. The parents, alumni, students and others in the community issued a petition signed by 100’s to the Monroe County Board of Education asking that the administration be replaced (June 2007). Nothing has been done or will be done to rectify the situations at this school.

Well, well, well - during the interview with Ms. Betts on WKRG at 5 pm she stated that her son (who was one of the students involved) was a member of a gang.  Now she wants help from News 5?  Sounds like a “poor me” publicity gimmick to me.
