“Just like any other provider of food service we have to go up on the prices,” says school district spokesman Terry Wilhite. “For us that means increasing the cost of a pint of milk purchased on a daily basis.” Wilhite says the school district decided to raise prices over the summer. He says the cost of milk they buy per month has ballooned from $60,000 to $70,000.
The Alabama Farmer’s Federation says the blame lies in a number of factors. Spokesman Jeff Helms says milk production dropped last year. That led to a lower milk supply this year. Helms says there also an increased international demand for dairy products.
Mobile County School officials say they haven’t yet raised the price of milk.
