Governor Bob Riley vetoed a resolution that would have given Alabama Legislators a 62% payraise. In a veto message sent to the House of Representatives, Riley said "I am returning to you, the body in which it originated, House Joint Resolution No. 29, without my signature and approval. I find said resolution to be unacceptable because I feel the proposed increase in compensation would be excessive". In his message, Riley also encouraged lawmakers to join him in his veto decision. By a voice vote, which was not recorded, lawmakers approved the payraise for themselves. They can override the Governor's veto, but it must be with a recorded vote. News 5's Kimberly Curth is at the State Capitol today. She'll report live from Montgomery on News 5 at 5pm and 6pm.
