An automated recording tells recipients their account information is about to expire and prompts them to go to a bogus website and enter their banking information.
"It worries you when you start seeing things with your banking," said Twyla Guesnard, who received the call Monday evening.
Guesnard says the phone number that showed up on her caller ID was 702-520-1154, which is a Las Vegas area code. Guesnard also said the biggest red flag was when the name on her caller ID said "THIS IS A SCAM."
"I just let it ring and let the answering machine pick it up," she said.
The message the scammer left directed her to regionsrenew.com, a link that looks similar to a page on the real Regions Bank website. News 5's web producer David Rencher traced the domain name to a man living in Hamburg, New Jersey, but our attempts to contact that man were unsuccessful.
A spokesperson for Regions Bank tells News 5 they've received hundreds of calls from concerned customers, and they've contacted police and phone companies to investigate.
The spokesperson also said Regions Bank will not contact its customers by telephone or email asking for personal information.
To report fraud regarding your Regions Bank account email . Any customers who logged onto the website and provided their information are asked to call 1-800-REGIONS (734-4667) .
Regions customers in Alabama, Tennessee, Florida and Mississippi have all received calls regarding the same scam.
