One of Alabama's largest banks is warning its customers about a telephone scam.
An automated recording tells recipients their account information is about to expire and prompts them to go to a bogus website and enter their banking information.
"It worries you when you start seeing things with your banking," said Twyla Guesnard, who received the call Monday evening.
Guesnard says the phone number that showed up on her caller ID was 702-520-1154, which is a Las Vegas area code. Guesnard also said the biggest red flag was when the name on her caller ID said "THIS IS A SCAM."
"I just let it ring and let the answering machine pick it up," she said.
The message the scammer left directed her to regionsrenew.com, a link that looks similar to a page on the real Regions Bank website. News 5's web producer David Rencher traced the domain name to a man living in Hamburg, New Jersey, but our attempts to contact that man were unsuccessful.
A spokesperson for Regions Bank tells News 5 they've received hundreds of calls from concerned customers, and they've contacted police and phone companies to investigate.
The spokesperson also said Regions Bank will not contact its customers by telephone or email asking for personal information.
To report fraud regarding your Regions Bank account email . Any customers who logged onto the website and provided their information are asked to call 1-800-REGIONS (734-4667) .
Regions customers in Alabama, Tennessee, Florida and Mississippi have all received calls regarding the same scam.
were the victims of a telephone scam.
The FBI cyber crime squad said this is a new twist on an ongoing scam since the requests are coming by a computer generated phone
call.

Now if we all knew this person’s name and Domain name we could let all the hackers know so they could make this person’s life a living h--l.Fight fire with fire when needed or live by the sword and die by the sword are a couple of sayings that come to mind.

Thank you all SO much for checking this out so fast.  I knew I couldn’t have been the only one that got that call.

I hope nobody got scammed, and the person behind it, gets caught, and spends a lot time in prision.

Makes me so mad to see people get scammed.

Great job again, WKRG!!
