Copper Theft: “Inside Job”

“This year we're keeping out over four million pounds of waste out of the landfills,” says Solid Waste Program Coordinator Tony Cross. That total is growing. Cross says the collect an average of 400,000 pounds of recyclables a month.
Orange Beach is considering a curbside recycling program. In order for recycling to catch on in a community, officials in Daphne say it’s got to be easy for the homeowner.
“We ask our residents to put everything in one bin we'll sort it at the curb,” says Cross. “We have special trucks that come by that have compartments on it where we separate at the curb.” The recycling program’s growth also reflects Daphne’s growing and changing population.
“We have more people now that does recycling try to keep material out the landfill,” says Solid Waste Department Supervisor Clement Conaway. “Then we have a lot of people that move into the area from other states that are big on recycling when they come in.”
