step closer to establishing a football program. School president
Gordon Moulton said he plans to ask trustees to launch an
intercollegiate football program when they meet next week.
Trustee approval of the new program and its budget at Thursday's
meeting would start a process that could result in USA fielding an
NCAA football team by 2009.
Doctor Steven Stokes, chairman pro tempore of the board, said he
favors a football program and believes other trustees feel the
same. He said a college football team could help USA become a
national university.
Moulton estimates that a football program would cost between $1
million and $1.5 million in its first year, with a budget growing
to about $5 million by the program's fifth year. The majority of
the cost would be covered by a $200 to $300 annual increase in
student fees.
2,000 students recently signed petitions calling for a football
team.
