Parents and community leaders came together in Prichard Tuesday night to voice their concerns over a plan that would close two schools. The Mobile County Public School System has proposed closing Whitley Elementary and Glendale Elementary schools.
Under the plan, 600 students enrolled the the schools would be bussed to Florence Howard Elementary near Downtown Mobile.
School Superintendent Doctor Roy Nichols and board members gave people a chance to voice their opinions.
People packed Whitley Elementary School.
Their biggest concern is taking schools away from the community.
Prichard Mayor Ron Davis hopes something can be worked out.

i hope the school board doesn’t tell us that these schools are in such a state of disrepair that it would be cheaper to build new schools than repair these..that would open the board to the critisim of ‘what happened to the money thats supposed to be alloted for maintenance and repair?’ was it diverted to other places? if so, then we have the wrong managers in what is fast becomeing a very costly position..and we need to be adressing getting new managers instead of closing schools..there needs to be some whistle blowing and some red flag alerts when things start going wrong..the board needs an early warning system in place..one of the things this school board in particular needs is an independently elected oversight committee..too many holes in the present system where board members have access to taxpayer monies for personal use. do they have access to school board credit cards and cash for mardi gras throws, cars for personal use? etc..?
