Some police officers along the Gulf Coast are making less money than fast-food restaurant employees. In Silverhill, the starting pay for a rookie cop is $9.12 an hour. Police Chief Al Coggins patrolled the streets alone for months, because officers were leaving Silverhill for other, higher paying law enforcement jobs."It's ridiculous," says Silverhill resident Angela Janes. "You can actually work at McDonald's and make more money than being a Silverhill police officer."
Town officials wouldn't talk to News 5 on camera about the police pay issue but councilman Tim Wilson says he's concerned about the low pay and wants to talk to the council about ways to increase starting salaries for officers.
Silverhill police officers are the lowest paid officers in Baldwin County. Compare the $9.12 an hour to Foley officers, who are paid $18.25 an hour. Officers in Robertsdale start at $11.64 an hour. In Orange Beach, rookie cops make $18.22 and hour. Elberta pays their first-year officers $12.00 an hour.
