BEIJING (AP) - Among all the protests, pollution concerns and
talk of boycotts surrounding the Beijing Olympics, organizers are
getting the most complaints about the squat toilets. Most Chinese
are used to using them -- many foreigners are not.
The issue came up again over the weekend when the San Diego
Padres played the Los Angeles Dodgers at the new Olympic baseball
venue. The portable toilets trucked in were of the style widely
used in Asia, but rarely in the West.
One of the venue organizers says it would be tough to change
every permanent toilet in the 37 venues. So the focus will be on
satisfying three groups of visitors: athletes, journalists and the
Olympic family. That means primarily VIPs.
He says nowadays more and more people demand sit-down toilets --
but it'll take some time for the transition.

Yes, every nation except for poor China, parts of Korea and Nothern Japan. Even rural Africa and South America has adopted the modern toilet. You should go there. grin

Every nation in the world has evolved to use the modern toilet, not just North America. Its time China move its people into the 21st centruy. You can bet they have sit down toilets in the Great Hall in Bejing.

oh my gosh are you serious? Those people need to get a life if they are going to complain about toilets. Ive had to use them, I lived in Okiniwa for 4 years. Its not that bad. And the athletes I am sure could use them. All you have to do is squat over them… it just takes a little muscle from your quads....

Seriously, if you are in a foriegn country you should expect things to be different. That just makes Americans look more snobby and rude by demanding to have sit down toilets…
