The new superintendent of the Saraland school system is expected to be on the job in less than a week.
The Saraland Board of Education has already voted to hire David Stiles.
He's a former principal and assistant superintendent in the Mountain Brook School System of suburban Birmingham.
Stiles says he was attracted to Saraland because it's a fast growing community.
He says, "There are very few school systems around the state that have a half cent or a one cent sales tax devoted exclusively to education. Those are ones that typically do pretty well financially, and that is also something I was very impressed with was that the community was willing to vote in favor of doing that. "
School board member Maria Bladorn says Stiles was highly recommended by educators around Alabama because of his experience.
Among his first challenges, according to Bladorn, will be "where we're going to keep elementary students to alleviate some of the overcrowding that's probably going to take place at Saraland Elementary. We expect our enrollment to double there so we're looking at putting them (students) at Adams so that won't be a problem."
When the Saraland school system takes over Adams Middle School and Saraland Elementary School next year, officials with the Mobile County Education Association say they'll be representing the teachers there.
Danny Goodwin, an executive director of the association, says, "We will form a local association for them. We can't keep them under the umbrella of Mobile County's Education Association because we're a different organization now, but they will have their own local."
Saraland school board members say the system's attorney is negotiating a contract with Stiles for an annual salary of between $125,000 and $150,000.
They expect to have him on the job by April 1st.
