New rules are being announced to protect
children and pregnant women when building renovations might expose
them to lead dust from old paint.
The Environmental Protection Agency will be requiring
contractors to train workers on dealing with lead paint and
protecting building occupants. They'll also have to post warning
signs, contain dust in work areas, close all vents and verify
proper cleanup.
The new rules take effect in two years. They apply to work done
in housing, child-care facilities, and schools built before 1978,
the year lead was banned for use in housing.
High levels of lead exposure can cause brain and nervous system
damage, resulting in behavior and learning problems.
